this is the question mez_charu asked for my earlier post on Being Indian and not speaking Hindi?...do you exactly understand what you are asking?..
Learning a language as a means of extending the wisdom in one thing...learning a languge just becase there is another group out there which is demanding you to learn is totally different thing.
you are asking the poeple of a whole state to learn YOUR language so that YOU can talk to them...And how exactly you are asking it?
Just by snapping like 'Its your national language....you have to learn it..no excuses ..no exceptions'..
you dont put any effort...but they have to put all the effort....
they have to change their school system to include Hindi as another languge..who is going to pay..you? ...no them...
those children has to spend extra time and effort in learning this new languge which has nothing in common with their mother tongue, which makes it much more harder to learn...for a north indian whose mother toungue is derived from Sanskrit just like Hindi, it is easy to learn Hindi...Not for Tamilians...
And this is not just one year or 5 year program...me, my family, my children, their children and the whole chain of generations has to keep doing this...
Dont you think...you need to be little more understanding, being sensitive when asking such a large request which needs tremendous effort...
Take a moment and think....those same extra efforts are being put to learn English..why?..because it is usefull...not because it is forced...
this same mistake was done by some insensitive, stupid politicians 50 years ago...they demanded in this same dismissal tone to learn Hindi...
And it is not surprising when the people of the whole state got up and said "Fu*k you..we are not learning your languge just becuase you are ordering us to learn..."
so its been there more than 50 years..and it still continues...we got nothing against learning a new languge....but we do have problem if someone forcing us to do this..
i tell you, if this issue was handled with little more sensitiveness and delicacy may be we would have decided to learn the language just for the sake national integrity...and may be we are all united by language....but no..it was not handled properly...which put us in this situation for the last 50 plus years...
This will continue for another 50 years..or 100 years...unless the approach from North changes...
P.S..by seeing the comments it looks like some people miss the point and start bashing/comparing languages..it is not against Hindi or any other language...Each language has its own specialities and beaties, I respect that....what we are talking here is making one community to leanrn another's language with the name of national integration..
Close
quite vitriolic.... and childish
Your problem is that you consider Hindi as a North Indian language and not a National Language. The domineering attitude of Northies hasnt helped much in this regard.
what you posted applies to national anthem also - and did that stop you from reciting it with pride? - did u ever consider it as just a Bong poem
and to counter what you said - unless the politicians of the "anna" and "amma" ilk put their egos aside and think from the whole nation's point of view, PLU s will suffer from such delusions
even at the height of anti-hindi agitation there were some saner people who started insitutions like Hindi Prachar Sabha etc in recognition of the need to learn the national language- i am sure you are aware of that.
i had some sympathies for you about the airport incident where the lady at the counter asked you if you knew national anthem
but with the kind of views you hold, i now feel that you probably deserved it.
